Clifford W. Barnes Award

The Chicago Sunday Evening Club is pleased to announced that Lester Crown and Newt Minow are the 2020 recipients of the Clifford Barnes Award, in recognition of individuals whose faith or religious heritage has motivated them to a lifetime of service to Chicago and beyond. Indeed, Chicago is greatly indebted to the pair. A look at their Wikipedia pages is an astounding compilation of their achievements, both professionally and civically.

Messrs. Crown and Minow will be recognized at a luncheon in 2021, once the city fully reopens. In the meantime, we will be releasing interviews with Mr. Crown and Mr. Minow in the near future.

The Chicago Sunday Evening Club began the Barnes Awards in 2019; Jack D’Arcy and Phil Sweet were the inaugural recipients. Clifford Barnes was a remarkable man... businessman, clergyman, philanthropist, social activist. He founded the Sunday Evening Club in 1908, and co-founded the Chicago Community Trust in 1915. He chaired both committees from their inception until his death in 1944.
